ACBH Meets with Members of BiH Parliament

On June 6, 2013, the ACBH Executive Director, Ajla Delkic along with ACBH interns, Carrie Brinkmeier and Kara Valliere, met with several delegates of the BiH Parliament and members of the International Republican Institute (IRI). Accompanied by Borislav Spasojevic and Amila Karacic of the IRI, the visiting members of the BiH Parliament included: Diana Cekic, Sasa Magazinovic, Hafeza Sabljakovic, Senad Sepic, and Danijel Vidovic.

Ms. Delkic spoke about ACBH's efforts and informed the Parliamentarians of the importance of having representatives from BiH visit Washington, D.C. in order to increase collaboration and partnership between the two countries. Representative Sabljakovic, the head of the first "Women's Club" within the Parliament of BiH, discussed the potential for connecting the Women's Club with the female members of the Congressional Caucus on Bosnia. The Members of Parliament noted how BiH's current complex political system lacks sustainability as well as accountability, further postponing constitutional reforms. Another area of concern was that a large number of Bosnian youth rely on political parties for job security instead of investing the time and effort necessary for engaging in civil society. This leads many to believe that Bosnian youth will have a harder time competing with European standards of professional development.

ACBH would like to thank the IRI for bringing these Members of Parliament to Washington, D.C. and for the chance to gain insight into their perspectives and recommendations for the improvement of various areas of concern in BiH. ACBH looks forward to strengthening cooperation and communication with members of the BiH government in order to promote a multiethnic, unified, and democratic BiH.
